THE Georgia Ports Authority's (GPA) Port of Savannah will shortly take delivery of four super postpanamax ship-to-shore quay cranes from Konecranes.
The cranes that are currently en route to the US east coast port were ordered from Konecranes in 2011. The original order also included 20 rubber tyre gantry (RTG) cranes that have already been delivered.
The quay cranes have a lifting capacity of 66 tons and an outreach of 61 metres and are identical in design to the ship-to-shore cranes that the GPA bought form Konecranes years ago.
The Port of Savannah, which claims to be the fastest growing container port in the US and the second-largest port on the American east coast. Exports are driving growth at the port, which amounted to a total of 1.6 million TEU in 2012 and is equivalent to 12 per cent of all US containerised exports handled last year.
