A CONSIGNMENT of wind turbine blades worth US$3.37 million was recently loaded onto a ship to be exported overseas at the new terminal for outsized cargo at Shanghai's Lingang Industrial Park.
This was the first consignment of outsized cargo the terminal has handled since it became operational in August, reports Xinhua.
The terminal, mostly used to handle heavy and outsized machines and equipment, has four 30,000-tonne berths and five 5,000-tonne berths with a 2.51 million tonne capacity. It is equipped with three gantry cranes with arms of 40 metres each, and another with a 28-metre reach. There is also a 230,000-square metre stack yard.
Huo Zhenfei, forwarder handling the wind turbine blades, said that before the terminal starts running, outsized and heavy lift cargo, has had to be moved on the ground to other terminals on the lower Yangtze.
The new terminal can help shippers and forwarders save considerably while improving efficiency, so that manufacturers can better cater to worldwide demand, said Mr Huo.
