THE International Air Cargo Association's (TIACA) has called for the UN's International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) to agree to a single market-based measure in reducing carbon emissions to avoid a patchwork of national rules.
A global agreement has been welcomed by TIACA rather than the European aviation carbon scheme of the ETS (EU Emissions Trading Scheme) since postponed by the European Commission following a general outcry over its usurpation of national sovereignty.
Following the endorsement of a market-based measure at TIACA's annual general meeting in June, the association wishes to join with ICAO in building a single global agreement which it hopes to be settled at the ICAO's global assembly in Montreal held on September 24 to October 4.
Said TIACA secretary-general Douglas Brittin: "We do not underestimate that there are many challenges to overcome, but the time has come to make history."
ICAO, the aviation UN's regulating body, was designated in the Kyoto Protocol as the body with authority to set international aviation's greenhouse gas policy.
